The purpose of the Radon Zone map is to assist people and organizations to enact radon reduction methods, such as testing and radon-resistant building codes.
Even though the Radon Zone map can not tell you if your specific home has high radon levels (because you need a radon test to find that out), you can use the map to find out if your community is in a high radon area of Radon Nation USA! But, homes with high radon have been found in all zones. That is why the EPA says all homes should be tested regardless of geographic location.
Understanding EPA's Map. The map shows 3 zones, with the Zone 1 (red) being above EPA's Take Action Level.
The EPA also provides an interactive online radon map tool that you can use to find your State Radon Program Website, contacts and other resources, so you can learn about radon reduction programs in your area. You can also Zoom to your county, and find usual radon levels. The EPA recommends its maps be used to supplement local data, in order to further understand and predict the potential radon levels of a specific area.
